Inflation at 2.1% in September
The Census and Statistics Department of Hong Kong announced that the overall consumer price index rose by 1.9% year-on-year in September, and the underlying inflation rate, excluding the impact of the government's one-off relief measures, was 2.1%, both higher than the levels in August. In September, prices in several categories such as electricity, gas and water, miscellaneous services, and transportation increased year-on-year, while prices of tobacco, alcohol, and basic foodstuffs decreased. The government stated that the situation in the Middle East has pushed up international oil prices, bringing upward inflationary pressure, but price pressures in other areas are manageable, and overall inflation will remain at a moderate level.
